I would like to wish a very special Mother's Day of JOY to all you mothers, mothers in waiting, or mothers hopefully to be someday. Mother's day is a time set aside by the world to honor our mothers. What greater honor can be bestowed on a woman than motherhood! Grandmotherhood!
For all of you grandmothers, I know that you know what I mean. For all of you others, your day will come. I remember the day I heard of the impending joy. Diana and I hugged each other and jumped around crying forever. I could not be happier, I thought. I thought wrong. One day, through modern technology, I got to see that tiny infant in the womb. I saw her heart beating and even saw her suck her thumb. I thought surely I could never be happier, but I was wrong again. One day this tiny bundle was placed in my arms, and my heart burst and ran down into a tiny pool of love and compassion for the tiny little wide-eyed bundle of joy. One of the greatest gifts we can receive from our children is to be a part of our grandchildren's lives. Now a year later, the only thing that could make me happier than to have her around is maybe to have several of them around.
Whenever I see her big eyes, or her toothy smile, or watch her play, my heart swells. Now I ask you, "Could I possibly be happier?" I think that God may have given me a grandchild just so I could be forever young through her.
As I look at Katelyn, I think of how God must feel as He watches us. Is He full of pride and joy over watching us play? Does His heart swell when we try to follow in His footsteps? Is He filled with compassion when we fall? Yes on all counts, but not because of who we are but because of whose we are. We are His children and we will be forever young in His eyes.
I want to close with this thought for all of you young mothers: take heart - the days and nights of endless, thankless toil will pay off and one day you will know all the joy of grandparenthood. It is not a toil nor is it a thankless job, but one full of love and beaming with JOY. So cherish all the Mother's Days between now and then as they are equally precious and pass all to fast.
-Joyfully yours,
A proud and happy grandmother,
