WILL OF MAN
I. God has given
man a will (Genesis 49:6; Deuteronomy
21:14; II Peter 2:10) and the ability to exercise it (Genesis 1:28,
2:16).
II. Man's will
is
negatively influenced from
within himself by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the
pride of life - Genesis 3:6; James 1:14; I John 2:16-17.
III. Man's will
is
negatively influenced from
without by Satan through deception and misinformation Genesis 3:1-6: II
Corinthians 3:14, 4:4;
II Thessalonians
2:8-12;
II Timothy 2:24-26.
IV. Man's
natural
tendency due to the negative
influences is to go against God
-
Proverbs 14:12, 16:25; Luke 23:25; John 5:40.
V. Man's will is
positively influenced from within
himself by emotion and logic - Ruth 1:8-18; Luke 10:33-35.
VI. Man's will
is
positively influenced from
without by God through His operation and provision - Psalm 136:25;
Proverbs
3:33-34; Daniel 2:20-21; Matthew 5:45; John 6:32-33; James 1:5.
VII. Man's will
can lead him to perform acts
considered good by other men, (Leviticus 1:3, 7:16; Matthew 7:9-11,
12:11;
Acts 28:2) yet not be acceptable to God (Genesis 4:3-5; Isaiah 1:10-15;
Luke 16:14-15; Romans 4:1-2).
VIII. Man's will
cannot thwart the will of God,
though it may resist long and hard
-
Daniel 4:17, 5:21; Esther 4:14; John 5:21, 6:37; Romans 9:18- 23;
Ephesians
1:5.
IX. Man's will
is
not violated in salvation,
rather, it is changed by a work of God to conform to God's will - Psalm
110:3; Romans 2:4; Philippians 2:13.
X. Man's will
alone is not sufficient to save
him though he desires it intently
-
Luke 13:24; John 1:12-13; Romans 7:18, 9:16; Hebrews 12:17.
XI. Man's will,
after regeneration, becomes truly
able to align with God's will and indeed, is expected to do so [though
it starts out shakily due to lack of knowledge, it performs better as
one
matures] John 8:36; I Corinthians 10:13; II Corinthians 8:3-5, 8:11-12;
Colossians
1:9-12,
4:12; I John 5:14.
